🩸 Your Blood Test Results: How to Find Them
We know that waiting for blood test results can be worrying. In most cases, you can check your results yourself without needing to contact the surgery. 😊
📱 1. Check the NHS App — our preferred option
The NHS App is the quickest and easiest way to view your blood test results.
Once your results have been reviewed and released to you, they may appear in your NHS App under your health record. 📋
If you can access your results on the NHS App, you do not need to contact the surgery to ask us for a copy.
☎️ 2. If you cannot use the NHS App
If you are unable to access your results through the NHS App, please contact reception and we can advise you. 📞
⚠️ Do I need to contact the surgery about my results?
Usually, no.
Your clinician will review your results. If a result is abnormal and requires action or follow-up, we will generally contact you. 📲
Please do not assume that you need to telephone the surgery simply because you have not heard from us.
🏥 Blood tests requested by the hospital
Sometimes the GP surgery takes a blood sample on behalf of a hospital or other secondary-care team.
The same principles apply:
- 📱 Your results may be available through your NHS App.
- 💻 Depending on the hospital and your circumstances, they may also be available through Patient Knows Best (PKB).
- 📤 The blood test result is automatically sent to the requesting clinician/team recorded on the blood test form. The GP surgery does not need to send a separate email or copy of the result to the hospital.
- 🧪 Hospitals in our local area, including York, Scarborough and Hull, use the same laboratory service as us. Hospital staff can access the results directly through the laboratory system, regardless of where the blood sample was taken.
❓ What if the hospital says they cannot find my result?
If you can see the result in your NHS App, you can take a screenshot and email it directly to the hospital secretary if they need a copy. This avoids the need for the GP surgery to resend the result. 📧
Alternatively, the hospital secretary or clinical team can contact the laboratory directly to request the result. 🏥
There is usually no need for the GP surgery to resend the result when the hospital can access it directly or obtain it from the laboratory.
This helps us avoid unnecessary duplication and protects GP practice resources, allowing us to concentrate on caring for patients who need our help. ❤️
💙 Thank you for helping us use NHS resources efficiently and ensuring our staff have more time to care for patients.
